Crisis Management 

Planning to Manage Major Incidents

This course focuses on providing learners with an underpinning knowledge of operational and tactical emergency planning. The content reviews and researches wide ranging possibilities in relation to major incidents which ensures that learners adopt a thorough approach when considering potential threats to their organisation.

Learning Outcomes (LO)

1. To understand the background to civil contingencies in the UK
2. To increase awareness of UK resilience
3. To provide the learner with the knowledge and understanding to enable them to appropriately contribute to a major incident plan
4. To research strategies for training and dissemination of organisational roles and responsibilities.

Crisis Management - Generic

Learning Outcomes (LO)

In order to achieve this unit the learner will:

1. Realise what a major incident is
2. Understand and be able to implement the methods required to reduce the impact of a major incident
3. Understand the role of their own organisation during a major incident
4. Be familiar with the function and roles of each major agency attending
5. Explore the system and purpose of integrated emergency management
6. Develop the ability to manage a response to a major incident
7. Recognise the impact of decision making and the consequences
8. Experience an appropriate simulation exercise


This course can be adapted for specific sectors, such as the tourism industry, oil industry, transportation providers, utilities etc.

Crisis Management – Railway Lead Officer or Railway Incident Officer

Learning Outcomes (LO)

In order to achieve this unit the learner will:

1. Understand what a major incident is
2. Be familiar with the purpose and job of a RLO
3. Explore the method and purpose of integrated emergency management
4. Understand the function of the emergency services
5. Explore and understand the role of the Railway Accident Investigation Branch
6. Be aware of the possible challenges posed by the media
7. Recognise the impact of decision making and consequences
8. Experience a simulated railway related major incident
